The mission of the Environmental Health Programs in the Division of Public Health is to protect the health of our communities by fostering a safe and healthy environment. We work in collaboration with residents, private businesses, and public agencies to achieve this through permitting, inspections, education, best practices, complaint investigations, and compliance monitoring. Environmental Health staff investigates complaints received from the public alleging sanitation deficiencies and foodborne illnesses associated with perm​itted facilities located in Wake County. Follow this link to submit a complaint and/or for more information.

Groundwater and wells staff investigates concerns related to:

  • improperly abandoned wells (open wells)
  • concerns about improper well construction
  • renter concerns about water from a private well
  • concerns about man-made contamination in a well
